The self-driving company still needs people

AI & Agents

What is a self-driving company?

A self-driving company is not a company without people.

It is a company where people stop spending their best hours moving work between systems, chasing context, and checking whether someone did what they said they would do.

What work stays with people?

People choose the destination. They decide which customer problem matters. They make the tradeoffs. They bring taste to the work. They own the outcome when the call is hard.

Agents take the goal, gather the context, do the path work, check the result, and escalate when judgment is required. That is the division of labor.

The point is not to automate people out of the company. The point is to promote people into work that only people should do.

Direction is human work. Execution should increasingly be agent work.

Why is the chatbot layer not enough?

Most companies are still stuck at the chatbot layer. A person asks for a summary. The model writes one. The person pastes it into another tool. Nothing changes in the operating system.

A real agentic workflow includes a job, access to the right context, a clear definition of done, and a way to verify that the job was done well.

It doesn't just answer questions. It runs a loop.

Take a manager's weekly work. Prepare the account review. Pull the pipeline changes. Compare commitments against delivery. Flag risks. Draft the update. Ask for a decision on where the tradeoff belongs with a person. That is more useful than another chat window.

Why manager agents matter most

The most valuable agents will be manager agents because managers are often the constraint. They spend their days collecting status, reconciling different versions of reality, and translating work across teams.

An agent that removes that coordination burden gives the manager more time for priorities, coaching, quality, and decisions.

No more meetings. More management.

What should you measure?

But throughput alone is theater.

If your agents create twice as many tickets, drafts, or code changes, but review time grows, incidents rise, reverts increase, and completed work falls, you have not built an advantage. You have built a faster way to create work for other people.

Measure the whole loop:

  • Review latency
  • Incident rate
  • Reverts and corrections
  • Actual completion
  • Customer or internal-user outcomes
Speed without those measures is vanity.

Why company context wins

The winning systems will also have context. Generic tools can look impressive in a blank chat box. They break when the work depends on how your company actually operates.

Your pricing rules. Your account history. Your delivery standards. Your product decisions. Your data definitions. The decisions have already been made by the people who came before.

When quality is comparable, the system with company context and real integrations wins.

This is why the next step is not one giant agent that knows everything. It is one high-value function with a bounded job, followed by another, connected through a shared interface and reusable skills.

Where should you start?

Start with revenue operations, support, finance, or engineering. Pick the work where context is scattered, the cadence is repetitive, and a good outcome is measurable.

Run the loop. Inspect it. Improve it. Then spread it.

The same is true for data.

Business intelligence should not be a ticket queue where every question becomes a request for an analyst to pull numbers from five systems. A semantic data layer provides every team with consistent definitions for pipeline, retention, margin, utilization, and risk.

It makes answers faster. More importantly, it makes decisions comparable.

The system improves when learning is built into the design.

Feedback becomes a proposed change.

The proposed change is evaluated or tested through an A/B test.

Keep what works. Remove what doesn't.

That is how agentic operations compound. Not through a dramatic launch. Through thousands of small decisions made faster, checked more carefully, and improved over time.

The self-driving company will not feel empty.

It will feel more deliberate.

Fewer people will be buried in coordination. More people will know where the company is going, why it is going there, and what needs a human decision.

That is the company worth building.
